Making the most of your summer break as a business owner

Are you a business owner who finally gets some downtime over early January? Do you want to plan out your 2025 to be successful? Early in the year can be an amazing time to step away from your business and plan out your moves for the year ahead.

Taking yourself away from the daily grind can give you the capacity to think about the bigger picture. We’ve put together some useful items you might like to consider over the course of a few hours or days to get the most out of 2025.

Review your business in 2024

The best way to analyse the year-that-was is to look at your statistics from 2024.

Financials – How is the checkbook looking? Are you satisfied with your profit? We recommend running a profit and loss statement and comparing it to this time last year to understand the impact over 12 months.

KPI’s – What targets did you meet or fall short in? What contributed to meeting or not meeting these KPI’s? It’s critical to work out if these KPI’s still serve your business.

Goals – how did you go meeting your 2024 business goals? This is a great time to reflect on how your business has changed over the year and if you are still heading in the same direction.

Systems and processes – Did your systems and processes help or hinder you this year? This could be a good time to consider the software and hardware you use, to help your team work most efficiently.

Customer satisfaction – Analyse customer feedback/reviews from 2024 to identify areas for improvement or innovation.

Planning for 2025

Here are some items you could consider in your planning for the new year.

New year, new goals – what does your company want to achieve in 2025? Write down your business, financial and growth goals, with a 12 month action plan to achieve them. This can be a simple table. We have a great resource for business planning in our tailored business advice meetings.

Staffing – do you have the right set of skills and staff to help you reach your goals? Consider training and hiring needs. This is also a great time to consider if you are doing too many tasks yourself. Keeping a task diary over a week or month can be useful to identify what can be automated, delegated or outsourced to others.

Competitor analysis – is there room for innovation in your industry? Think about how you can best serve your customers based on what they need right now or in the future.

Marketing – what’s working and what’s not? Is your target market still the same as last year? Think about where your ideal audience hangs out in person and online, and what is the most effective way to reach them with your messaging.
